Massage is the use of hands or other means to manipulate muscles and areas of tension within the body. Evidence of body massage has been documented for over 5000 years, where the first records arose from ancient India, China, and Egypt.
The development of massage in India in 3000BC came from the belief that illnesses develop in people who are not living in harmony with their environment. To re-establish harmony, patients must regain balance in both the physical and emotional aspects of life. They believed that massage would balance both aspects and would aid any other treatment.
Hippocrates, who was widely regarded as the father of medicine was well known for his holistic approach to health care and wrote “The way to health is to have a scented bath and an oiled massage every day.” He believed that alongside a corrective diet, tonics, and fresh air a massage was commonly prescribed to treat a range of ailments. He found that rubbing towards the heart was more beneficial in the treatments of ailments. Although it would be much later on that the circulatory system would be understood his observations still stand today.
The likelihood is that massage will have developed well before the first records of it. It is a very natural reaction to rub aching muscles and techniques will have developed from this act of self-soothing.
Holistic therapy is an amalgamation of many different therapies which have all evolved over time considering ancient techniques and beliefs and using modern day understanding of physiology. However holistic therapies do not just consider the physical act of massage, but they also look at the concept of balance and harmony. Ensuring the patient is aware of the effects of the physical, social, economic, and environmental impacts on health and wellbeing, and working with the patient with a variety of techniques to ensure balance is returned.
